A 70-year-old man’s examination revealed rectal cancer. Because he couldn’t afford Medicare part B, he was reluctant to have further testing. The clinic took over and arranged for a complete workup, including lab tests, GI consultation and subsequent colonoscopy with biopsy.
    CT and MRI scans detected no spread of the tumor. But, after seeing the colon surgeon, the man declined surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatment. He decided to try an alternative approach, despite understanding the potential risk of tumor progression. He lost 40 excess pounds, which normalized his blood sugar and blood pressure.
